Join Westwind as we join with Cornerstone Church of Ames for a special Good Friday service. This four hour event is designed to walk you though the events leading up to Easter. Through worship, prayer and teaching you will be drawn into the crucifixion of Christ. Although you can come and leave as you please, this event has four separate hours of expression. To fully experience it you are encouraged to be there for the whole event.

One of the greatest gifts Josh has is his ability to present a program that entertains and educates the entire family. More than just education and entertainment, an encouraging message is also shared that will leave a powerful impact on adults, yet be simple enough for children to understand. The Science Show is filled with high-energy and fast-paced experiments, laughter, fun, and audience involvement.

Josh will be joining us April 4th from 6:30-8:00pm at South Middle School. Bring a friend! Bring a neighbor! Bring anyone you can find!

By definition, a nova is a star that suddenly becomes bright. That is the idea behind a new song we will be singing at Westwind, introduced last week by the New Heights band.  “Nova” by Hillsong United, takes that idea and applies it to the church today, in that as a church our desire is to burn more brightly than ever before. Check out some of the highlights of Westwind’s Science Camp 2011.

Do you miss bringing your cup of coffee with you on Sunday mornings? Well, relax! Now you can raise your cup as Westwind moves to a more “Beverage Friendly” environment.

Westwind is relocating to a new facility beginning Sunday, August 7. In order to meet our growing facility needs we have been granted the approval to move into South Middle School for no extra cost. This is a tremendous answer to prayer as Westwind continues to grow and add more ministry opportunities to our worshipping community.

Are few highlights to the new facility are:

• Expanded parking lot
• Intimate, personal worship space
• Beverage friendly worship space
• Larger Children’s Ministry area
• Opportunity for mid-week family ministry
• Warm welcoming center

We will be having a “test run” Sunday on July 3 as Waukee Elementary School refinishes the floors. So, make sure you head to the right place that Sunday. We will then be back to South Middle on Sunday, August 7.

Bring your friends and family out to Clive Aquatic Center in Clive for a fun-filled evening with your favorite Westwind folk. We have the entire facility rented out for Westwind friends and family. This is a great summer kickoff event that is FREE to all.

Come explore the Universe and the awesome God who created it at Westwind Science Camp 2011.  We will study the Solar System and the stars which will lead us to understand how big our God is and how He alone is worthy of our worship and praise. We are just a very small part of His creation, and He desires to have a relationship with us.  The stars tell of His story and glory and He wants us to know that story as well.  We will explore our solar system, what stars really are, how the constellations tell God’s story, and so much more!  You won’t want to miss it!

Science Camp will be June 27-30 from 10 am to 3 pm.  It is for 1st-4th grade students. The cost is $25. Register today and join us for an “Out of This World” experience!

This year we are joining Cornerstone Church in Kids Camp at Hidden Acres Christian Center.  Kids camp is a special week designed for kids and their friends who are going into 3rd-6th grade.  It is a great opportunity for kids to get out of their normal routine and spend some quality time getting to know and love God more.  Pastor Troy Nesbitt will be teaching and challenging your child(ren) to grow in their faith.  Kids will meet new friends, worship together, enjoy camp activities, and walk away with a deeper understanding of God and His plan for them.
Kids Camp will go from July 31st to August 4th.  Cost will be $200 before July 15th and $220 after July 15th.

What is Kids Camp?

Kids camp is a special week designed for Kids and their friends who are going into 3rd-6th grade. Camp is a great opportunity for kids to get out of their normal routine and spend some quality time getting to know and love God more.

Our camp pastor this year will be Pastor Troy Nesbitt, Cornerstone’s Lead Pastor.  Pastor Troy brings a love for God’s word and has a love for kids that is unsurpassed.

Our camp is staffed by Iowa State and Escape 22 (high school ministry) students.  They each apply for the position and are selected specifically for their maturity, talents, and contributions they will bring to camp staff

Parents can drop campers off at Hidden Acres on Sunday afternoon, July 31st, between 4:00 and 5:00 PM.  Registration will be at the Family Life Center at Hidden Acres.  Camp activities begin at 5:30 PM with dinner for the campers and staff.  Hidden Acres is located in Dayton, Iowa, north of Ogden.  Take Interstate 35 north to Highway 30. Go west on Highway 30 to Ogden, exit to Ogden and head north.  Drive through town and continue on P 70.  Hidden Acres is approximately 14 miles north of Ogden.  You will see a green “Hidden Acres Christian Center” sign on the right.

What will happen at Kids Camp?

Kids Camp is always a great week!  Kids meet new friends, experience awesome worship and teaching, enjoy lots of camp activities, and leave camp with a deeper understanding of God and His plan for them.  Each day will consist of Bible Study, crafts, recreation, team time, free time, and a theme party. Waterfront activities will require a swim test.

Kids will need to come prepared to dress up for our theme parties!  The theme nights for this year are:

• Movie Nights–dress like your favorite toy
• Red, White & Blue

• Fifties

Can Campers Call Home?

No phone calls will be made during the week.  Parents can call the emergency number provided if they need to talk with campers.  Letters to campers and staff (mailed no later than Monday, August 1st)are HIGHLY encouraged.

Lori Mueth will be taking on the Ministry Assistant position. Lori has spent the last year as a nanny for two different families. She has a degree in graphic design from Hawkeye College, and has a servant’s heart. She will be the friendly voice on the other end of the phone line when you call the church office.

The host house provides the main course and all you have to do is bring a side dish. What an easy way to get to know other people from Westwind!

Why are we changing Bible translations? In 2010 a new version of the NIV was released and is scheduled to start printing in 2011. This means that the current NIV Bible we use will be different than the newly printed versions. So, in effect, a change was needed. The Elder Team saw this as an opportunity to examine other versions available. In looking for a unifying translation, the Elder Team had identified a new version other than the NIV 2010 edition in which to examine. With prayerful consideration and counsel, a decision was made to move from the NIV to the Holman Christian Standard Bible.

How did you choose the Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)? The HCSB is a recent translation that was released in 2004. Using a team of 100 translators from 17 denominations, and the most current translation tools, it is a precisely translated text, yet it conveys the original Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic with familiar English words and with grammar understandable to today’s readers.

What is the single most important reason for choosing the HCSB? The HCSB is suited for serious Bible study as well as personal and public reading of Scripture.Their translation process emphasized faithfulness to the original wording of the Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic sources so you can be sure your study gets at the heart of what the original writers said. And their precise English styling brings vitality into the reading, yet without sidestepping important biblical words and phrases.

What does this mean for my old Bible? We think there are many fantastic translations available to the public, so we encourage you to keep your current Bible as a study tool. We are using the HCSB to teach from in our Celebration Services in order to unify the message and bring clarity to our worshipping community. We are not making anyone change Bibles, instead we are just letting you know about our change in translations.

How can I get an HCSB? There are many ways to get an HCSB; online stores, your local Christian book store, or by purchasing one from Westwind. We are also providing versions of this translation at our welcome table for you to use in our Celebration Service for no charge. This will help you see why we love this version so much.

Why is “Holman” used as part of the translation name? Holman is America’s oldest Bible publisher, tracing its roots to a colonial print shop which opened its doors in 1738 and published America’s first European-language Bible in 1743. The Holman name reflects a time-honored legacy in the publishing of fine Bibles. Providing the world a new English translation is an appropriate next step in continuing that legacy.

How can I get to know the HCSB better? One way to get to know the HCSB is by reading it online. There are many places to do this, but we suggest using their Study Bible site (mystudybible.com). This is an easy and interactive way to get to know the HCSB. Another way we are encouraging our worshipping community to get to know the HSCB is by joining our church leadership in reading through the Bible in a year. We believe this will unite Westwind around an important cause–understanding God’s Word in a personal way. Our website will provide reading plans that will help you engage with God’s Word through this new translation.

Winning at Work and Home, a 16-session study, focuses on the two areas that are central to a man’s life: career and family. It will begin to build the walls of manhood through study dealing with a man’s chief responsibilities. It explores how a man can enjoy and engage his work and how he can relate to a woman in a whole new way.

Beth leads study participants through the Scriptures to discover the transforming power of freedom in Jesus Christ. Themes for this study come from Isaiah, a book about the captivity of God’s children, the faithfulness of God, and the road to freedom.

This in-depth women’s Bible study draws parallels between the captive Israelites of the Old Testament and New Testament believers in Jesus as the Promised Messiah. Beth looks at the Book of Isaiah through the lives of the kings who ruled during the prophet’s ministry. These kings exemplify many of the obstacles to freedom with which we must deal. Using Scripture to help identify spiritual strongholds in your life, no matter how big or small, Beth explains that anything that hinders us from the benefits of knowing God is bondage.
