Ten Reasons People Leave the Church

Outreach, Inc., in their booklet Ten Reasons People Leave the Church, and Why They’re Coming Back, describes why people are leaving organized spirituality. As Westwind seeks to be a worshipping community that impacts Dallas County, these reasons should help think about how to minister to the world around us.

10 REASONS PEOPLE LEAVE THE CHURCH

  1. I don’t believe in organized religion
  2. I have my own way of connecting with God
  3. I got tired of the church always asking for money
  4. My life situation changed, and I just never went back
  5. I don’t have to go to church to be a good person
  6. I’m too busy, and Sundays are my only time to rest
  7. Church is boring
  8. The people tend to have their own cliques–I never fit in
  9. Christians are judgmental and hypocritical
  10. I don’t think I’d be welcome anymore–I’ve done some bad stuff

I am sure we have heard some or all of these before. More importantly, Westwind understands why people are coming back to church.

REASONS PEOPLE ARE HEADING BACK TO CHURCH

  1. Time with God/re-entering of the soul
  2. Community and friendship with others
  3. Spiritual growth
  4. Love and forgiveness
  5. Peace
  6. Healthier family life
  7. Healthier life balance

As Westwind continues to teach God’s Word and promote transformational living, let’s think about how we can help people reconnect with church.
