Making the Most of Mondays

The term Monday morning quarterback, for those who aren’t football oriented, means to analyze the actions of the quarterback and coach the next day. It is saying, “now that I have all the information, here is what I would have done instead”. It isn’t really a positive thing to be called, but it is understandable since we now have all the information we need to look back and decide what was and was not effective.

At Westwind, in a similar fashion, we hope you will Monday Morning Quarterback our Sunday messages. We aren’t asking you to critique them, but analyze what was said and how it applies to your everyday life. Since we are a church that leads people through book of the Bible it is easy to know where we are heading next Sunday (usually the next chapter). So, here are a few suggestions to help you get ready for “The Big Game” each Sunday.

  • Read the passage ahead of time. We are currently teaching through the book of Matthew, why not read through it in one sitting? Then, read the upcoming chapter as preparation for the message.
  • Listen to past messages. We know people are busy, so we provide podcasts to our messages each week. This helps people who could not be there on Sunday, or were serving in a children’s ministry area. You can find our online messages HERE, or subscribe to our podcast HERE.
  • Discuss the message. It’s okay, you know, to talk about the Sunday message on the way home, or to your favorite Sunday restaurant. This helps you process what was said and engages you with the text.
  • Join a Connection Group. Our Connection Groups are sermon based. This means that we use the Sunday text as our scripture background to our group discussions. We believe this helps people 1) engage the text in a group setting 2) ask questions they may have about the passage, and 3) apply the text in a real way.
  • Study on your own. There are all kinds of online tools to help you dig deeper into understanding God’s Word. Make use of the internet for more than just Facebook and fantasy football.

At Westwind we want people to be talking about our messages on Monday morning. We believe it is quintessential for the transformational growth of followers of Jesus. In doing so, it only makes our worshipping community stronger in the knowledge of God’s Word.
